September Planting Day

Today was planting day!  I stopped by Doty's and picked up a variety of tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, collards, and cauliflower.

Creating a green mulch with our southern pea plants.

Started with the new bed.  First to go in were mounds of cucumber seeds:

We planted a spread of tomatoes - 1 cherry variety, 3 grape tomatoes and 2 heirloom variety plants.  In addition, all the seeds we had started went in, as well as an abundance of old seeds that probably won't pop up - I figured, why not.
New garden bed, all planted!
Next, a variety of peppers - jalapeno, spicy chili, sweet banana, and our own bell.  At the very north end we have green chili pepper seeds we acquired from a friend in New Mexico - we'll see how they do!  :)

Our green mulch!
Then, on to the big bed. The first step was to remove the southern peas.   We harvested what pea pods we could find, and then pulled out the plants.  Since my corn seeds were not silver queen, as a I had previously preferred, I purchased some and planted them sporadically throughout my corn sprouts.  We made two new mounds for corn on the East side, as well as squash mounds - pumpkin (2 varieties),  acorn squash, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, summer squash, zucchini, and then we left a mound for the seminole squash that we received from some neighbors (we have yet to eat. )  In addition, I added some pole beans and sugar snap pea seeds just next to the corn.

The sweet potato has really taken off!  We added some fresh dirt to the mound, as I am told it increases root production.  In addition, we left some okra plants - at least until the squash and others really get going.
